The Self-Titled Album · Recorded Before Everything · Status: Unreleased

Japanese Tea Garden

Every band has one. This is ours. Recorded before the major label deal that was never actually offered, which is exactly the kind of detail that ends up mattering in litigation.

This album exists. We have heard it. Our lawyers have heard it. Their lawyers have heard it. Nobody else has heard it, and nobody will, until a rights dispute originating sometime in the early 1970s — the details of which remain under seal — is resolved to the satisfaction of several parties who may or may not still be alive. We remain cautiously optimistic. We have remained cautiously optimistic for five decades.

"This was the album before there was a band, really — before the mythology, before the mission statement, before we knew what any of this was for. We're told it's good. We're told it's ours. We're told a lot of things by people who bill in six-minute increments."
